The Honeymoon Ends

As you know, anything new has a honeymoon period where all seems great. My honeymoon period here has come to an end. Friday was a repeat performance of Thursday with my troubled student. The new ending was that he left school to go get his shotgun to come back for me. He came back without the gun but still tried to attack me. The school secretary had already called the police and they were there to intervene. It all ended with nothing much happening other than more threats to kill me. Most places I wouldn’t worry too much but here is like the old west. When people make threats they usually intend to carry them out. With this in mind I didn’t sleep much Friday night and kept a watch Saturday. This morning at 1:45 I was awakened by a sound. Our apartment, as I explained before, is a duplex with an outer room. The first sound was the outer door squeaking open. The next sound was someone trying to pick the lock of my door. I quietly went to the door and listened. There were at least two people. One was holding a flashlight the other was working the lock. I held the deadbolt with one hand and the doorknob with the other. I could feel them working on the lock and see the flashlight’s reflection through the small door window at the top of the door. After a few minutes my wife asked if she should turn on the lights. When she flipped the switch they ran away. Now, we’re both awake and will probably not sleep the rest of the night. You may say that I should have called the police. The problem here is there’s no one to call in the middle of the night and I have no service to make a call while inside. I’ve determined that my best course of action is to stay armed and once they make a breach I end the problem one way or another. I’ve never run from a fight in my life and I’m not planning to start now. My issue is  it’s not just me now. My wife is here and her safety is more important than my pride. All I could do tonight is tell her that if they got in she should hide in the floor on the other side of the bed and stay quiet because I don’t think they know she’s here. If I go under I can’t protect her so my fight will be lethal. I won’t take any chances. You may say that I shouldn’t go into this with that attitude but in this all the chips are on the table. I write this now because I may not have the opportunity later and doing this will help me stay awake. Maybe I’ll get to post another soon but if not just know my life has been real and it’s been fun but right now it’s just not real fun.

Wow. Sounds like you'll need a pistol.... for only bear and moose of course, but who knows. I'm glad you heard them.
